Meet Phuong Nguyen of Nails and More in Lawrenceville

Today we would like to introduce you to Phuong Nguyen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Phuong. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I migrated to the U.S in the year of 2000 through the help of my cousin. Three days after I got to this country, my cousin asked me to work for him at his nail shop. I took the offer even though I had never known anything about nails at the time. First of all, I learned how to paint the children’s nails, then I started to paint the adults nails after I got a little bit better. The job wasn’t hard, but it required a lot of patience and attention. Then, I started to learn how to do sculpture nails which is the hardest thing I have ever learned due to the characteristics of the acrylic. Every day, after school, I found myself practice putting the acrylic on my nails or on the plastic tips at the nail shop. Finally, after nine months of learning and practicing, I could complete a set of artificial nails which I felt satisfied.

I continued working as a nail tech while going to college. This job helps me to pay for books, gas, foods, and a portion of my tuition until the day I graduated from college. Before opening my own nail salon, I used to work as a customer service associate for a big shipping company. The experience I learned from this job was very useful for me in handling the customer service for my business, especially in difficult scenarios. Additionally, the knowledge of marketing I learned in school also helps me earn recognition from local customers. As the result, we have more businesses from the customers that found us online or from the recommendation of other customers.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has never been a smooth road for myself or my business. The first struggle that I encountered was making sure that all my employees are on the same page with me on the work ethic. To many nail techs, this is a just commission-based job, and finding a new place to work is not difficult for them. Therefore, they do not want to be controlled too much by salon owners. For instance, most nail techs want flexible working schedules, or they can show customers that they are not happy when they have a difficult customer. However, as a business owner, I expect my employees have to come to work on time and be professional in communicating with all our customers. As the result, some techs might quit their job and I have to start seeking and hiring new employees. In this industry, this process keeps going over and over again.

The second issue that I still have had to encounter is the delivery of decent customer service to all our customers. In fact, I have to admit that it is hard to make everybody happy. Despite all the experience I learned from my previous job, I still sometimes have to receive complaints from customers. However, by embracing the idea of customers are always right and trying to minimize making mistakes, I have overcome most of the problems of customer service and earned the loyalty of my customers. Additionally, I seriously accepted negative feedbacks from customers so that they can help me to serve our customers better. Consequently, understanding what customers need and want help creating a strong relationship between our clients and our staff.

Please tell us about Nails and More.
My business is known as Nails And More salon. We’re located in Lawrenceville, GA. The salon has been operated by my wife and I for almost 5 years. We offer all manicure, pedicure, and artificial nail services. We primarily serve local customers. In our community, our salon is known for being up-to-date with new nail trends and being able to create complicated 3D nail art. Additionally, our nail techs are known for their friendliness and professionalism.

Being professional in providing customer service makes me proud of my business. At Nails And More, customer service is our first priority. In other words, we put customer service on top of everything. This is the element that brings customers back to us after they tried us out. Occasionally, we have some hard-to-please clients, but they still show their appreciation toward our customer service at the end of the session.

What set us apart from our competitors is we will do everything we could just to make our customers feel happy when they visit us. From the moment a customer walks in the door, we show them our best hospitality; then, while customers are getting their nails done, we frequently check back with them to make sure everything is alright. Finally, we show our customers how much we appreciate their businesses.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have organized my business in a more systematic way. First, I would create an Organizational Chart and assign responsibilities for each individual in the company. This method will save me a lot of time. On the other hand, each employee will be able to do their jobs more effective. Then, I would carefully hire employees through interviews. Finally, I would create a large budget for marketing after I already completed the two previous steps. On top of everything, I would find a bigger place than the one we currently have so that it could accommodate more people when we are busy.

Issue With Ingrown Nails

Based on the article- The Industry’s issue With Ingrown Nails, written by Michelle Pratt, that was posted on Nailsmag.com on Dec 4th, 2017.

According to the author, nail techs are restricted on providing services to customers that have “warm, red, inflamed, or infected” toenails in order to avoid serious problem.

By definition, an ingrown toenail happens when “the sidewalls grow up over the nail, and the nail pierces the skin”. However, many nail techs are confused about the concept of the ingrown toe nails. As the result, they will respond incorrectly when they come in contact with customers that have ingrown toenails which might lead to more severe problems later. The author also points out the reason why different nail tech/ pedicurist handle ingrown toenails differently.

According to Kimberly Kennedy- a Raleigh N.C based podologist and Certified Master Pedicurist, there are two kind of nail techs, those with a passion for foot care, and those with a passion for art. In fact, the second group is the most popular one. They are nail techs that ” graduate and just want to do manicures and enhancements to make their clients look and feel pretty, but once in the salon, they are forced to perform pedicures on clients with problem nails or health issues” according to Michelle Pratt. These nail techs just focus on how to make nails look pretty, but they were not educated on how to take care clients with excessive build up under the nail that is causing pressure against the nail wall. In order to reduce the risk of causing serious ingrown toe nails, the author suggests two ways that help to serve customer better and protect nail techs license from being revoked.

First, technique is the first element that prevents the development of an ingrown toenail. By not cutting the nail too short, or rounding the corners, or filing the sides of the nail plates in the groove area, the nail tech will be able to eliminate the biggest cause of the ingrown toenail. Particularly, the corners of the nails should have no points that could irritate or pierce the skin, nor should they be rounded deep down the sides of the nails.

Second, using the right tools can help avoid the problem of ingrown toenail. Three essential ones are flat-edge nippers, toenail cutters, and a Blacks file (rasp).

In conclusion, nail techs need to be careful in handling ingrown toenails. They need to know when to say NO with providing services in order to protect the health of their clients and their licenses. Recommending the customer with the ingrown toenail to the closest podiatrist is what a nail tech really needs to do.

For Clients: How to Choose a Quality Nail Salon

These are some tips to help nail care customers to find a quality nail salon where they are supposed to receive decent services plus safety. Information was collected from Nails Mag’s website.

Attention nail care customer: Use this as a guideline to determine whether your salon is providing not only great nails, but a safe and pleasant experience as well.

1. Are the salon and individual workstations clean? Does your nail technician observe proper sanitation practices?

Before the nail technician begins your service, you should both wash your hands. The towel at the table should be clean, and all instruments to be used in the service should have been disinfected. Don’t be afraid to ask your nail technician how the instruments have been disinfected. Files and buffers that are not disinfectable should be new and unused.

2. What is included in the price of the service?

Many salons provide all-inclusive service prices; some salons charge a la carte. Be sure you understand exactly what services are performed for the price. For example, is polish extra? Is top coat or fast-dry extra? Will you be charged for broken nails?

3. Did the nail technician explain the service to you, ask you questions about your needs, and inform you of proper nail care at home?

There have been so many advancements in artificial nail products that nail technicians can make the most natural-looking nails in the world, but artificial nails aren’t for everyone. Your nail technician should ask you about your needs and explain the at-home maintenance you should do to care for your nails. You should also share pertinent medical information with her (certain medications, for example, can hinder the application of certain nail products).

4. Does the salon have a strong odor?

There is an odor associated with some artificial nail products, but there is no danger to customers smelling limited amounts of it during a service. However, an overpowering odor can be an indication of an inadequate ventilation system in the salon. Ask your nail technician or the salon owner what is done in the salon to minimize exposure to odors, vapors, and filing dust for customer comfort.

5. Does the technician use an electric file?

Electric files are commonly used in the nail industry, and, when used properly, are perfectly safe. You should not feel any pain or burning when the electric file is being used; if you experience any discomfort, tell your nail technician immediately. The only time an electric file should be used on the natural nail itself is with a buffer (no grit).

6. Is the nail technician and the salon licensed?

All states except Connecticut require licenses for nail technicians, and most states require that the license be displayed for customers to see.

7. What products are used in the salon?

Most salons use products that are for professionals only, and your nail technician should be able to explain what products she uses and why. There have been great advances in nail chemistry in the last 10 years, but some salons still use chemicals whose use in nail care is not recommended, specifically a product called methyl methacrylate (MMA).

8. What if you have a problem with your nails?

Good communication between the nail professional and customer is essential, so if you are not happy with your service or your nails, talk to your technician or the salon owner about it.

Something to Talk About: Soft, Peeling Nails

Are you frustrated when they’re failed to grow? Here are some FAQs and answers for your situation.

Question: My nails are so soft! Why do they bend and split? I can’t stand them!

Answer: You’re not alone. It’s a common problem. It could be from medications you’re taking, or because of your lifestyle — for example if you use a lot of cleaning agents, or swim, or if your hands are often in water. It could even be because your body lacks certain nutrients.

Question: Is this a medical problem?

Answer: people with a thyroid problem or heart condition often take medicine that can have a negative impact on their nails. People with skin problems, such as eczema or psoriasis, also may notice their nails are brittle and peel. If none of this sounds like you, it could be you have a zinc, iron, or calcium deficiency. What we put into our bodies — or what our bodies lack — shows up in our nails. One thing that has been shown to help is taking a biotin supplement. The only negative is that it takes about six months to really notice a difference.

Question: I don’t think that describes me. Could anything else cause it?

Answer: It may be because your hands are in a lot of water or are exposed to chemicals. Water and cleaning agents will dry out your nails, and they will become brittle. That will make them soft and cause them to peel. Do you use gloves when you clean and do dishes?

Question: No, and I don’t really want to. Am I out of luck?

Answer: Not necessarily. If you’re willing to add cuticle oil to your nails regularly and keep polish on them to protect them, your nails will be strong enough to stay beautiful at an active length. OR, your nails can still look gorgeous by covering them with a thin layer of protection in the form of gel-polish, or a gel or acrylic overlay.
